Garden Lessons

Over the past two years Mr. NowHere has had situations which have kept him out of the garden.  While last year was a crazy-early start year allowing us to get the garden done before the last-year situation hit, this year he had knee replacement surgery in late May (he’s bionic!) which kept him out of the garden until late June early July (really.  We promise, doctor.  He stayed out of the garden until…July…ish).  That meant it was time for Mrs. NowHere to step up and figure some things out.

I learned how to mix up bug spray and then spray the garden for bugs.

BT; it's a biologic which works on worms digestive tract.

I learned how to make myself put on my big-girl jeans and long sleeve shirt, wipe myself down with mosquito wipes (I love you, DEET!), boot up, get out there, and pull weeds in the early morning.

Snakes? Bugs? Bring 'em on!

I had a refresher course on the lawn tractor and got the mowing done.

Don't mess with Mrs. NowHere!

Oh yes I can!

Big Bertha, our gas-powered weed-eater, is my new best friend.

Isn't she lovely?!

I picked a BUNCH of beans, pulled the carrots, picked cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, peppers, and cut okra.

I managed my herb garden (until the heat got it).

I learned how to tie up tomatoes using the Florida weave method (google it; it’s pretty nifty!)

I learned how important it is to go out into the garden daily.

I learned to appreciate ALL the things Mr. NowHere/Mr. Marvelous does year-in/year-out.

It sounds like a lot more than it really was but at the end of the summer I am so grateful to have had this opportunity.  I have always been thankful for the work Mr. NowHere does every single year to make sure we have a productive (and pretty!) garden.  But in the past the work has been divided; he planned, planted, maintained, and harvested and I helped plan, helped harvest, and canned.  Participating in the actual planting and maintaining and just general outdoor work has given me a greater appreciation for the work.

Being outdoors working in the yard and the garden is a blessing one only understands after one has done it.  You find so many fascinating and beautiful things!
