Getting Ready for Another Hatch!

After that last disappointing hatch in our new Brinsea incubator, we ordered several more Govee thermometer/hygrometers,  spent a day calibrating the old IncuView Pro, and started collecting eggs.  Right now our egg collection is a little challenging.

A good day is 9 eggs right now

Currently we have 12 adult quail; 10 female and 2 male.  We have one female who has gone on an egg strike so we are getting about 9 eggs per day.  We also have a cage of "teen-agers" who still are not laying.  We have one customer who has a standing order of 4 dozen eggs every Friday.  That does not leave us much room for collecting eggs to incubate!

If the lazy teen-aged hens 6+ week old girls start laying this week, we will be able to have those eggs for eating and have the 9/day for incubating so that we can give the Brinsea another try.

Calibrating the Brinsea.  One in each corner and one in the middle

Last week we were able to set aside 33 eggs and the IncuView Pro was started up with a dry-hatch protocol.  So far it seems to be keeping a consistent 99.5-100.5 degree temperature and the IncuView Pro is easier to keep at the proper humidity than the old IncuView (Old Faithful).

We will be candling Saturday, October 5th and hopefully I will have some pictures to share with you Monday.  Also hopefully we will have a hatch starting up by then, and (again) hopefully this time we will have a much better hatch rate.

We'll keep you posted!  (But we won't be counting the chicks until...well...you know!)
