Week(end) Recap

Does life ever get…lifey…for you?  (It’s a new word.  I made it up myself) (Thanks; I like it too!).

Life has been a bit lifey for us lately; some business stuff we’ve been wading through, some personal stuff I won’t bore you with.  Mostly just stuff.

Some of our neighbor’s dogs came for a visit in the wee hours one morning.  Two of our layers/breeders  died and the rest quit laying.  It’s been two weeks and we are just now back to getting a whole 4 eggs per day, down from the 10 eggs per day we were getting.  Hopefully I will have enough eggs for our regular  customer this week.

We had an NPIP inspection.  Shout out to our WONDERFUL inspector for the state; she is a treasure!

We moved some quail around.

The grown-ups, also known as the breeder set, got moved back into cages in the quail shed.  It’s just easier to catch them for testing and then pop them into the lower cage so we don’t test someone twice or miss testing anyone.

The brooder babies got moved outdoors to the tractors.  We wanted to combine the two hatches since they were only 1 week apart.  But we had to get one set out of the small brooder.  It was getting cramped and messy in there, even with changing their flooring twice a day (I'll do another post about that and why we do that).  So we moved the older babies out into the tractor the grown-ups had been in.  A week later when the younger crew were ready to go out, we moved everyone into the NEW large tractor.  There has been no aggression between the two crews and they are settling in quite well together.  Yay!

We had a new hatch.  We used the IncuView Pro and managed to get a 50% hatch out of the eggs that were fertile.  Not great statistics but much better than our last 37%.

Hey lookit; I have WINGS!!

We decided after the dog fiasco to order some hatching eggs from Zack and Jenna at MyShire Farms.  We love dealing with Zack and Jenna and are looking forward to hatching these.  I'll keep you updated!

We tilled the side garden and planted garlic.

We mowed what we refer to as the "Back Forty".  It's not, really, but it feels like it when it has gotten badly overgrown and needs work!

Before: a limited view of the back forty, and the greenhouse in the background

After

We moved the greenhouse from under the oak tree (where it got no very little sun) to out by the quail shed (where it will get partial sun).

Moving the greenhouse.  Isn't it amazing what you can do with a lawn-tractor, a chain, and a hand-truck?!

We got caught up with weed-eating and general picking-up of stuff out of the yard.

We still find Sally glass lying around the yard

We found Jenna McClelland, a new friend who is musically gifted.

We've seen some spectacular sunsets down at the beach.

And a rainbow or two as well.

We went to Shrimp Fest.

Of course, there is always the things which require our attention every day.  You know; work, laundry, cooking, cleaning...As my Mom used to say, "The problem with life is it's so daily".

The trick is to find the joy hidden in those little daily things.  It's there; you just have to look.  Or smell.  😊
