Life has been only slightly less busy since our big day week the first of December.  It's a little hard to believe we are on this side of all that was going on.  Just to give a quick recap:

  1. We had a big hatch of 31 quail chicks.  At the same time, we had a cold snap (temperatures into the 30s.  Brrrr!) When the temperature drops under 50, even with heat plates/lamps quail chicks cannot survive (we learned that lesson the hard way a year or two ago!), so the chicks had to be in the house. 
  2. Cletus retired and is now full-time on the homestead.
  3. We had a BIG first day at the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishers Market (quite a name, isn't it?  which is why they usually abbreviate to CAFFM).  We gave away some samples of English Muffins, sold some English Muffins, sold some jellies, sold a baby blanket and a shawl, and traded some ornaments and bookmarks for some smiles from some really cute, sweet kiddos.
  4. We disassembled Cletus' home office ~ a very big step to making him feel retired ~ and reorganized his office into the Workroom (craft room/home business office)


    See those apple boxes filled with puzzles?  That is designed to keep Pippin from literally climbing the walls and playing Spider Man from the ceiling.  Oh, that Pippin!

  5. We turned the craft room into a spare bedroom with a desk for Cletus when he wants one. 
  6. We brought plants into the house because of the cold.  They lived with the baby quail.  They all lived in Cletus' new desk room.  After 10 days, the chicks and plants moved outdoors.  There was much rejoicing!
  7.  We discovered that while the kittens were too little to bother with a flocked Christmas tree last year (they came home right after their surgery and weighed barely 3 pounds each), this year they were quite interested.  We thus had to find a new home for the tree and go find another one which is not flocked.  

We don't have big plans for the rest of the month.  We are resting.  Now that we have most of the reorganization done (including Cletus getting his tool shed in order!), we have no pressing items on our to-do lists.  We have spent some time having coffee together.  In the middle of a week-day!!  

 

We have been to the movies with friends.  We have been to the beach.  We are learning what life is like without a Monday through Friday 8-5 (with 2 weeks out of every 8 taking after-hours on-call).  It's nice!



Cletus is busy ordering seed and planning the garden for the coming year.  He found his soil test results from a year or two back and is adjusting accordingly.  He has tilled quite a bit of the back and planted onions. The potatoes are coming up and the garlic is thriving.

I am working on learning as much as I can as quickly as I can about small-business taxes.  I will be listing both baby blankets and shawls on the Etsy shop quite soon.  If you are interested in either a shawl (triangular) or a blanket, I can send you pictures of what is in stock.  I can also do a special order of either.

Regular attendance at the CAFFM will begin the second Saturday in January.  See you then!

Watermelons And a Quail Recipe

    For a lot of years each fall when we discuss how the garden went over the past year, Cletus has said something along the lines of, "I am not trying watermelons any more!".  For a lot of years plus one, each winter when we are planning the next year's garden he says something along the lines of, "I am going to give watermelons one more try.  If they do not work this year, I am done with them". This year we have used landscape fabric in the garden and it has been helpful for things we often struggle to grow.  It keeps the weeds down, it keeps the pests down, and it keeps the water in the soil.  A few weeks ago we were looking over the garden and realized there was a watermelon over on one section of the fabric!   The variety is not a seedless hybrid but just a good, old-fashioned, seed-heavy, seed-spitting watermelon.  While it is not as sweet as some seedless varieties, it has that extra we-raised-it-ourselves-in-our-own-garden flavor. ...

Quail Housing Part 2: Cages

  Once we decided to stop using aviaries for our quail, Cletus started perusing YouTube Videos (a wealth of information!) for how different people built quail cages.  We both thought "Roll-Out" cages were interesting for the design to allow eggs to "roll out" to the front of the cage where they could be retrieved easily.  We got this idea from Dale's Quails (he sells kits) and Wynola Ranch (they sell prebuilt wire roll-outs).  Cletus was still working an 8 to 5 job at this time, but he got to work after 5 and on weekends to get these built.  Oh my! The first time you build anything is the most challenging, isn't it?  We did not purchase a set of blueprint plans from anyone, or a kit; he simply went to Home Depot, bought the lumber, the wire, and the hardware, and got to work.  It cost more and took longer than we were expecting.  There were some frustrations along the way.  But eventually he got 'er done (he always does; Cletus is AMAZING lik...

Recipe: Scotch Quail Eggs

  Have you heard of Scotch Eggs?  They are a unique dish made of hard boiled eggs wrapped in sausage, breaded, and fried.   I made some years ago with our chicken eggs.  The size of the eggs made me question just how in the world does one serve these?? I tried slicing them different ways (wedges like a lemon, round slices, quartered) and they never seemed to work right for me. When we began keeping quail several years ago I wondered how quail eggs would do as Scotch Eggs.  I figured they would work better given their smaller size, but somehow I just never got around to trying them. A few weeks ago a gentleman stopped by our booth at the market and was happy to find our quail eggs.  I asked him how he was planning to use them and he told me he was going to make Scotch Eggs.   That settled it.  It was time for me to try my hand at this!
