Winter
Winter set in this week.
I know our idea of winter is quite different from many other areas; however, for us a week of lows under freezing and highs under the mid-50s is as much winter as we want!
As I posted earlier, we had gone ahead with onions, garlic, and potatoes so this meant getting busy and tilling around the potatoes and then using that dirt to cover most of the leaves (known as "hilling" them)
The lettuce in the greenhouse I showed you a while back now looks like this
| (because we usually have more trouble with heat than cold, our greenhouse is not completely covered) |
We hope the fruiting banana tree will continue to ripen
But the small banana tree isn't looking too great
The elephant ears are trying to decide if they want to survive or not. They have gone into committee discussions so I'm not optimistic
My few little loquat fruit are looking OK
And the okra? The okra is defying all odds and standing tall.
| Do you see what I see? That's a bloom up top! |
We are fortunate. Our cold snap is supposed to break tonight and while we are anticipating one more night later this week with a few hours of freezing temperatures, the long-range forecast shows no other freezes this month.
Weather and health permitting, we will be at a poultry swap in Elberta January 11th. The following week we will be back at the Coastal Alabama Farmer's and Fishermens Market with quail eggs, English Muffins, and craft items (it's the season for a warm wrap!), possibly some jams and jellies.
Hope to see you there; in the meantime, stay warm!
